11/11/08 on CRUSTACEAN RECORDS! thank youuu, wisconsin. ;D

and BE THERE @ MERCURY LOUNGE 11/15 to celebrate the release.. this album is seriously worth celebrating — no bullshit whatsoever. sick riffs, vox, lyrics, and DIVERSE styles integrated into their already thunderous & melodic amalgamation of rock, surf, punk, & metal — including 2 gorgeous slower songs, an epic instrumental, and aaron screaming over a fucking ACCORDION on one track! .. you canNOT pin them down as the average rock band. the sheer VARIETY and ingenuity of the sounds these guys can twist out of their brains — seriously amazing.

i’ll spread the good word of the giraffes till my face turns blue.. ;D

super showzen @ mccarren park & pool

22 07 2008

i just dropped yogurt IN my keyboard.

okay, these things need to be mentioned.

the limewire music blog is pretty flippin’ awesome (esp. since jens from the giraffes writes for it!) — they have events and reviews and pix going up all the time..

here’s their take on the giraffes @ mccarren park for the brooklyn kickball league tournament on 7/12! we were there.. of course. they attracted a pretty sweet crowd, too! biggest of the afternoon, i think. someone should also attest to the fact that really old men AND little mexican girls were diggin’ the giraffes. HARDCORE. they just wandered over and didn’t leave. who needs a record label?

AND check out the always awesome todd kancar’s pix in the giraffes’ photo albums on myspace.. ya gotta log in to see ‘em.. just do it! we know you have one! tool.

we unfortunately missed most of goes cube‘s set after getting hung up on beers and free hot dogs (!!!!!!!!!) at the turkey tavern down the block (or whatever the fuck it was called).. but we stayed for freshkills then called it an afternoon.

the next day we rolled out of bed at almost 1 (har, kim deal busted us when she told the audience she was up at 10 AM! while the rest of us had probably rolled out of bed at 12 and walked over hahaha) and sauntered on over to the same neighborhood for THE BREEDERS show @ mccarren park pool on 7/13, a jellyNYC pool party, apparently. very, very fucking awesome. seriously, cheers to jellyNYC. i’ve never been to something like that in the city — which either makes the pool party particularly awesome, or me particularly lame for not going out to more free city events. i’m leaning towards both. ANYWAY.

THIS is what i’m talkin’ about: nicole atkins & the sea

4 06 2008

oh man. i think i’m going to be obsessed with this girl soon.. she can sing, oh man can she SING!

ladies and gents, introducing nicole atkins & the sea. they’re playing a free show at the socrates sculpture park in LIC on june 17th, which is why i’ve been seeing her everywhere. i finally took the time to listen to the band this morning and loved the sound — after which, i was totally floored seeing them perform on david letterman awhile back. WATCH THIS. it sounds strange to say, but i literally got chills watching her sing. i think it was because her voice just soars on CD (or on the myspace tracks, rather), and then to just watch her belting it out and sounding just as great live.. just wow. and i LOVE the artwork she uses for her album, “neptune city” — it totally reminds me of old coney island. girlcrush much! more on nicole.

in other news, THE GIRAFFES ARE COMING.. !!! bowery ballroom june 12th, baby! AND.. the texas firehouse in LIC rocks. there’s really nothing like listening to live music on a ROOF and having no one bitch at you about it. in addition to humor, awesome art, and just an all around good vibe.. i even left my cell phone in the bathroom, panicked when i went back in and it wasn’t there and thought someone had definitely stolen it.. only to find the DJ had it. SWEET. more about this later ;D

oh and ps KEEP YOUR EYES ON LOLA STAAR! her dreamland roller rink NEEDS YOUR HELP and there are TWO benefits (june 13th and 15th) planned for NEXT WEEK!!!!!!!!!! they should be totally fun, and helping the dreamland roller rink reopen is a GREAT cause.. pps anyone notice the “reithoffer’s playland” that just went up in coney island in the space where the go carts and batting cages used to be?! awesome surprise the other night — good to see more amusements and less empty lots. fuck that shit!

rock steady!

ohio isn’t just for bad emo songs

2 05 2008

we came, we saw.. we ate chick-fil-a (why oh why aren’t you in NYC?!), and now we’re fatter for it. we just got back from ohio and life is WAY TOO BUSY FOR US TO HANDLE RIGHT NOW. we’re being swallowed by long hours of commuting and dentistry and show-seeing and interviewing and paper writing and commuting some more.. and GTA4? har har.

we shall be back, all in due time. we had an adventure! and now we’re tired.

since we’ve been gone:

b-52′s new album “funplex”! goldfinger new album “hello destiny”! we don’t have either of them because we suck! and we sure as hell don’t have MSI’s new release either. i know, we’re lame.

NOT. in the weeks to come..

THE GIRAFFES at bowery ballroom june 12!

GOLDFINGER at roseland ballroom june 26!

and all the way at the end of the summer.. ELECTRIC SIX ROCKS OFF CONCERT CRUISE AUGUST 14!

sweet jesus.

hopefully we’ll survive until then.. but just so you know, we’re not dead. zombified, maybe, but not dead.

we’ve got more rants to do and music to write about, oh yeah.

but first. LIFE. ugh.

;D

rock steady,

Maybe You Thought We Couldn’t Write Anymore About The Giraffes

14 04 2008

And in that case you would be WRONG!

We got out to seeing the Giraffes’ home cumming show at Mercury Lounge this past Saturday (4/12) and as always I had my head thoroughly rocked then blown to shit. I just cant get enough of them. It’s basically the best thing I’ve experienced, second to getting laid…seriously. And now I’m sitting here with a busted knee and a sore back remenissing (i’ll get audrey to fix the spelling on that.. audrey says: reminiscing! but i want to leave it the other way because it has more character..) on the night.

So where to start…well after acquiring ourselves some Malibu for the evening’s festivities we headed back over to Mercury Lounge and there was the one and only, 60% gay man with the plan, Damien Paris. (you know i really like these guys, even outside of their music, they’re awesome) and this mother fucker greets us with the biggest hug…and kisses… (He’s definitely the only guy i could watch grab Audrey and fake hump her with a strap on dildo and not be upset). I’m waiting on my Dodo…man still waiting.

Awkward moments pass involving an old Chevy and a self proclaimed anti-christ, then Drew comes along. I’m interested in seeing his new lotto commercial, put that shit up you filthy son of a bitch!! Just so you many readers out there know, if it does get on the internetz it will be founded here, check that shit out anyway, then when you’re done creaming your pants write me a report. 350 pages minimum, I want it on my desk by Wednesday.

Didn’t see Jens till after the show… but cool is he

Then be the Aaron, who most unfortunately on the last fucking show of the tour basically loses his voice… and yet once they hit the stage (after the power pop wonder that is Wormburner, which I’ll leave up to Audrey to write about if she feels so inclined to) he still can relentlessly belt out the vocals the same way this mother fucker always does. Now it may only be from screaming at the show or maybe sharing drinks from the stage with Aaron, and just about everyone else, but it’s two days later and my voice still feels shot…

Laryngitis, the other STD!” Ha, that shit doesn’t even make sense.

Now that I’m done raving on about the Giraffes like a gay little fan boy, Stay tuned for Audrey’s notes on the show….

back in the saddle: golden dogs, disturbed, lola staar

28 03 2008

okay so now it’s time for A BARRAGE OF RANDOM UPDATES!!!!!!!!!!

the golden dogs kicked ass at piano’s (158 ludlow at stanton) on the 20th! piano’s made for a nice little venue, decorated with long mirrors and HUGE pictures of tropical scenery. the bar in the front was packed to the HILT but through a glass door in the back is the stage area. there was a good turnout, which i was definitely happy to see, and the cap and i arrived to catch the middle/end of NYC band heavy rescue - the lead singer made me smile because you could tell that he loved being up there – he was belting out the lyrics off the mic even when it was the piano player’s turn to sing the vocals. they seemed proud of what they were doing, and it was cool.

the golden dogs took the stage as a four piece – dave azzolini on vocals and guitar, jessica grassia on keys and vocals, taylor knox on drums and stew keyduk on bass. neil quin, who we had met at the golden dogs’ electric six gigs last year, is no longer in the band (neil you rocked! take care, man!). i don’t know when the dogs will be back, but they rocked the shit out of NYC while they had the chance.

as we said to dave after the show, “you just spilled your guts all over the stage!” and they really did. the nervous energy is just radiating out of them, perhaps best exemplified in jessica’s bouncy piano playing! their set included ”birdsong,” “construction worker,” and “runouttaluck,” as well as a song the two of us hadn’t heard before called “painting ape,” the captain’s favorite, “dynamo,” and my favorite, “saints at the gates,” which got a particularly great crowd response. they of course took the opportunity to blow everyone away with their rendition of “nineteen hundred and eighty five,” which the captain later told me he never wants to end! the song is great on CD but when you hear it live and watch them drain that song for all it’s worth – classic concert moments, people.

the crowd shouted for an encore, but the dogs were beat – and i don’t blame them. the “golden dogs show is a bloodletting” comment certainly holds up. it was great to see them in NYC again, but even as they return to canada, keep an eye on these guys!

canada’s the golden dogs return to NYC

17 03 2008

THE GOLDEN DOGS ARE IN NYC ON THURSDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

they opened for electric six at their williamsburg music hall and bowery ballroom shows last year, and, well, to put it simply: these canucks rocked us hard. we bought their album big eye little eye at the show, which contains the standout tracks “dynamo” and “saints at the gates,” as well as the awesome paul mccartney cover “nineteen hundred and eighty-five.”

in any case.. we’ll have more on them after the show, but seriously, catch ‘em while they’re here – they’re from CANADA!

check out the golden dogs at piano’s @ 11 pm on march 20th.

“wanna taste it on my tongue
breathe it right into my lungs
taste the blood and sweat like wine
bite the fruit right off the vine
stretch out like you’re crucified
on the altar of my eye
resurrect my beaten soul
turn my metal heart to gold..”

also, check this blurb from the yep roc records site.. “saints at the gates” is a personal favorite of mine, starting from the first time i ever heard it, but now with the mention of tom waits and the quote “a golden dogs show is a bloodletting” (!!!!!!!!!!!), i couldn’t help but post it:

rockin’ the recap & quick news

7 03 2008

so we’ve been M.I.A. that’s okay, because it’s time to regroup.. and recap february ’08.

we began with one of our favorite brooklyn bands, night kills the day, at the knitting factory, along with openers ghost front, a rant about people NOT MOVING at shows, and a little look into NKD history and why you should definitely check out their album, “the study of man… and the developed shadow.”

then we took a look at a remix of mindless self indulgence’s new single, “never wanted to dance,” the current state of MSI affairs, and the purple-electro-prettiness that is the birthday massacre (the band that remixed the single and will be on MSI’s upcoming tour).

next we had a recap of another of our favorite brooklyn bands, the giraffes, at the shitty excuse for a venue – rockwood music hall (which actually made for quite a memorable performance.. and a priceless post-show interview), and following that, a plug of the giraffes performing one of their newest songs, “smoke machine,” on fearless music tv.

last, we had the captain share with all of us a lovely little flash animation called SALAD FINGERS.. and after that no one could look at spoons.. or rust.. or rusty spoons.. the same – ever again.

THERE’S THE RECAP! .. on to MARCH!
