happy (late) holidays + historical subway adventure THROWBACK!

29 12 2011

HELLO OUT THERE!

apologies for the radio silence – there have been so many changes/crazy happenings on the SNT homefront.. some very (very) sad, some very exciting – we are getting through. thanks to everyone for being part of the SNT family in 2011!

hopefully we’ll have a more formal year-end wrap up for you (IT’S ALMOST 2012!!!!111!11!1) BUT in the meantime – here’s hoping everyone had a wonderful holiday.

i wanted to take this opportunity to post about something i didn’t get the chance to when it happened – waaaay back in 2009 eric and i had an AWESOME historical adventure on a 1930s-era vintage train that ran in the NYC subway for the holiday season!

IT. WAS. MAGICAL!

if you don’t believe me, watch the video below and see/read more after the jump! there was a friggin’ VINTAGE JAZZ BAND PLAYING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACKED CAR AND EVERYONE WAS DANCINGGG!

you can see gothamist’s rolling coverage here (which is where i originally found out about the train), as well as the invite to this year’s dance party (organized by the levys’ unique new york) which has already sadly passed. DON’T MISS IT NEXT YEAR! the experience of being on that train in 2009 was something we won’t soon forget. music was by the fantastic vintage jazz band BABY SODA! i got absolutely obsessed with them after that train ride.. here’s some more quick videos of the awesomeness!

4 Things I learned from switching over to a Mac

9 12 2011

if only I could

Trying to make money doing .. well anything is getting harder and harder. The last thing I wanted to worry about is industry standard bullshit, but unfortunately I had to give in. As a video editor it practically doesn’t matter what level of skill I have, if I’m not running on Final Cut I’m doomed to be rejected over some software segregation that has embedded itself in the minds of people who know absolutely nothing about editing. In any case, I finally broke and got a Mac. Here’s what happened.

(p.s if anyone has any simpler solutions to these problems please feel free to share them)

1. How in the motherfuck do I burn a cd?!

As Mac pushes to kill compact disk, I think they’ve made it intentionally harder to even deal with one if you still have a cd drive. Back with my PC if I wanted to burn some music, I put in a blank disk, go to my trusty Windows Media Player, go to our drop my tracks and click burn. The End. It took me 20 minutes to find out that in iTunes you first have to make a playlist (which is probably one of the most unnecessary things I’ve heard of in my life) then magically the option to burn appears under File>Burn Playlist to Disk. That’s because it would be to difficult to have that option when I go to the album…. alright.. fine. So say I want to make a data disk, in Windows I pop in the disk, open it, drag my files and click burn… end of story. Not here. Now from the desktop I have to go to File>New Burn Folder, add my files then Burn. In both cases I have completely unnecessary folders left over that I have to remember to delete or else I’m left with extra garbage taking up space.

I’ve yet to find out how to get a data disk or even an audio cd to run on a PC let alone how to change the Artist name in bulk in iTunes.

SNT’s Audrey Leopard gets styled by Sammy Davis Vintage!

2 12 2011

I had the awesome pleasure of being styled by the fabulous Sammy Davis of the blog Sammy Davis Vintage recently!!!

Sammy is such a bright personality - I was instantly hooked by her style, vintage savvy, and super upbeat attitude! She’s a stylist and writer who runs her blog to share tips and tricks for vintage newbies, sellers, and enthusiasts alike, and she’s got a ton of great visuals and videos to boot (and not to mention a very healthy dose of positive energy)! For this video, we met at lovely NYC vintage boutique A Little Wicked and I got a crash course in shopping for vintage for the first time, and it was SUCH A BLAST. Vintage virgin -> vintage convert. TRUTH!

Watch the video below and then click HERE to jump to Sammy’s site to read the article and find out which of the outfits I picked ;)

Thank you SO MUCH to Sammy (and producer Chris, of course!) for this opportunity – keep an eye out for SNT’s exclusive video interview with Sammy coming up SOON!

Vintage (convert) loveeee,

Tales from the Internet – Bev & Bob

25 11 2011

I hate to make fun of these people, but if there’s anything I’ve learned from making my own videos and posting them on YouTube, you have to be open to criticism or you shouldn’t make your vids public. Anyway, this couple post somewhat elaborate videos of their cover songs that are as awful as they are entertaining.

It’s hard to pick one… so here’s four

New Series on SNT: DeFaced!

20 11 2011

We at SNT are very pleased to introduce a brand new series of posts:

     DeFaced
by Michael Stahl

           You’ll never be the same

We’re definite fans of Mike’s reality-twisting wit and perceptivity, and of course the fact that he knows very well how to roll with both the profane and profound! We’re really psyched to welcome him to the SUGAR -N- THUNDER family with this, his inaugural post, that offers a new take on one of America’s best loved sitcoms: Seinfeld!

DeFaced will feature Mike’s counter-critical approach applied to, not just film and television, but, in the spirit of SNT’s all-inclusive wingspan of topics, “anything and everything” that comes to either his drunken or sober mind.

Welcome, Mike!

“SEINFELD” SCORES A BULL’S-EYE

A Blessay* by Michael Stahl

To begin simply, Seinfeld is one of the best television shows of all time, regardless of genre.  And it would be hard to argue against anyone who ranks it at the very top of such a list.  The innumerable Seinfeldisms have been well-documented: “double-dipping,” “re-gifting,” “close-talker,” and so on and so forth.  Multiple networks still constantly air reruns, and we’re grateful for that because it’s still better than anything else on (Can it be over 13 years since the last new episode?).  This brand of success is attributed to the very plain fact that bazillions of people can relate to the content, just like any form of entertainment that garners such mass appeal, coinciding with overwhelming critical applause.  I present to you a new way to quantify that show’s ability to attract such a dynamic audience with the use of New York Magazine’s “Approval Matrix.”

I’d guess that anybody who picks up a hard copy of New York Magazine, and is familiar with its typical layout, will inevitably make a concerted effort to peruse the final page.  The Approval Matrix is the staff’s way of creating a “deliberately oversimplified guide to who falls where on [their] taste hierarchies” and is divided into quadrants rating what is despicable vs. brilliant vs. highbrow vs. lowbrow in all that is that edition’s week in pop culture.  Should a (drunken?) person view The Approval Matrix as a dartboard, Seinfeld, the series as a whole, scores a bull’s-eye.

Tales from the Internet – John Stamos’ Guide to Cuddling

If Arrested Development can be brought back then my dream of a new season of a raunchy version of Full House isn’t impossible. Until then there’s always this..

New World Order Employment Applications #006: KITA ST. CYR

18 11 2011

Introducing the next candidate to fill out SUGAR -N- THUNDER’s New World Order Employment Application: KITA ST. CYR!

The lovely Miss Kita St. Cyr is the “Caramel Cutie with the Booty,” a standout New York burlesque performer who also designs fabulous costumes and co-produces shows! Known around town (and all over the worldwide web!) for her classy, sassy performances and stunning pinup shots, Kita is always fierce and filled with inspiration. She combines her passion for dance, fashion, and all things retro with her troupe The Rhinestone Follies, while reppin’ Coney Island (she recently competed in the 2012 Miss Coney Island pageant!), and performing in shows like Wasabassco Burlesque, Psychobilly Luau, and the New York Burlesque Festival.

Who I am & what I do:

I’m a costumer/burlesque performer – basically I shimmy, shake and sparkle.

Projects you should know about:

I produce a pretty badass show known as Rhinestone Follies: The Sparkliest Show on Earth. It’s part burlesque, part sideshow, all awesome. Check it out!

Jump to 10:10 to see Kita’s performance filmed by SNT – full version here!

The Survey:

1. What defines awesomeness to you? Fearlessness. When art is made with 100% commitment to a single vision no matter how whimsical or ridiculous. When there’s no room for compromise. That’s honest, unwavering creativity. It’s pure and awesome.

2. Have you ever had a near-death experience? No lie, I got hit by a bus trying to bike to work one day! My bike took most of the impact, but I lost a shoe and got a little scratched up and bloodied. I still went to work (once I found my shoe).

3. If you could be absolute ruler of the world for a day, what’s the first thing you’d do? Bouncy castles for everyone. I’m having a hard time imagining a better solution for life’s problems. Also, cotton candy for breakfast.

4. What’s your guilty pleasure? Degrassi. It goes there.

5. What do you know now that you wish you knew as a teen/kid? Being a doormat is not the same thing as being nice. Not everyone has to be your friend.
