The Future Sounds…

30 09 2010

… Awesome!!

Hey remember this?! Yeah, that reminds me of this! But it’s the future and we have

TECHNOLOGY

I'z Advncd!1!

And considering the future…

(hey shut up, I know what you’re thinking… I’m going somewhere with this)

So you mix Carmen Sandiego and Gary Busey acapella and technology and you get Dub_Fx.

This guy, along with his lady Flower Fairy, travels across the whole of Europe (really, they just came back from Russia) as street performers. Mixing his voice, a wild set of vocal effects and loop pedals, Dub Fx pulls from his soul a full electronic sound detailed with his love for existence, his lady and his personal growth and… spreading a message against the powers that hold control over our lives and our potential as humans to find happiness beyond description (for serious!) .

If you’re anything like me and need a change from the playlist on Lite FM (I swear if I hear Hey Soul Sister by Train one more fucking time I’m gonna look up this fucking guy on Wikipedia, find his name, Google where he lives, then go on Google Maps and find his house, get on a Grayhound [cus I don't got my license], go to his house and destroy EVERYTHING because I am so sick of hearing about his chest hairs. That’s not fucking song material ok!!!!) and you nead a healthy dose of something not lame, then check out Dub Fx.

Here is a live video for Step on My Trip by Dub Fx (like I said he creates loops to sing over, the song doesn’t really start til about 2:12 but the setup is totally worth watching):

You could also go here to listen to the entire album for free, because at least someone knows it’s the future and how it works.

WY ABRVIATNG TNGS UNCSRILY MKS YU A JRK (or: why abbreviating things unnecessarily makes you a jerk.. jerk)

29 09 2010

now i’m not usually one to uh, sip the haterade (as the kidz say), BUT this has been irritating me for a long time.

ABBREVIATING. THINGS. UNNECESSARILY.

i think the first time i really started to notice this extreme downturn in the english language was while i was editing someone’s work for a local magazine. it was a review of a coffee shop and the writer used the “word” POMO to describe the interior. sorry, what? turns out POMO is an abbreviation of POSTMODERN – so not only are you being obnoxious, but you’re using a word that means TEN ZILLION different things to describe the interior of a f&*(#king coffee shop.

AHEM.

after this initial run in, it seemed unnecessary abbreviations were popping up everywhere. washington mutual condensed into WaMu isn’t so obnoxious because their name is long (and obnoxious) in the first place, but THEN. then it carried over into products. like MOUNTAIN DEW abbreviated to MTN DEW. why? just in case you forgot what “mountain” looked like condensed into three letters? saving space on the can so you can put more mountains and green swirly stuff?!

but here come the crowning glories.

recently i stumbled upon the phrase ROM COM in a movie review in entertainment weekly. ROM COM? guess, dear readers, what this could possibly refer to. ROMANTIC. F#@&*KING. COMEDIES. oh – are your fingers tired, you poor overworked EW writers? can’t reach the other keys to type the COUPLE. OF. OTHER. LETTERS. to spell out those perfectly useful and regular-sized words?!

did you also know that NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC is now NAT GEO, at least when it comes to their TV channel? why does one of the most respected mediums of scientific and educational programming feel the need to “GET HIP” and truncate (read: massacre) its name? UP NEXT! ON NAT GEO! i shudder everytime.

WHAT’S ON NATGEOTV? I DON’T KNOW BECAUSE YOUR ABBREVIATION IS HURTING MY EYES.

but my favorite, favorite, FAVORITEEE of them all is what the sci-fi channel did to itself, because it literally makes no sense.

yeah? YEAH? SCI-FI to SYFY. THAT IS LITERALLY AN ABBREVIATION OF AN ABBREVIATION. you know what’s even better? their crock of sh!t explanation about why they did it:

By changing the name to Syfy, which remains phonetically identical, the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider range of current and future imagination-based entertainment beyond just the traditional sci-fi genre, including fantasy, supernatural, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure. It also positions the brand for future growth by creating an ownable trademark that can travel easily with consumers across new media and nonlinear digital platforms, new international channels and extend into new business ventures.

OH, RLY?

Syfy more clearly captures the mainstream appeal of the world’s biggest entertainment category, and reflects the network’s ongoing strategy to create programming that’s more accessible and relatable to new audiences. Syfy will continue to celebrate the traditional roots of the genre, while opening the brand to accommodate a broader range of imagination-based entertainment.

and what do you know? all of that can be abbreviated to:

CHINGCHINGCHING WE WANT MORE MONEYZ CHINGCHING NEW BUSINESS VENTURES CHING NERDZ HAVE NO MONEYZ CHINGCHING MAINSTREAM APPEAL CHING EVRY1 HAV U FLWD US ON TWITTER? OR IS IT TWITR? TWTR? SEE THAT, IT’S PHONETICALLY IDENTICAL. CHING. SEE WHAT WE DID THERE? SWWDT? $$.

i hope a black hole eats you.

New World Order Employment Apps #002: SEAN COLÓN

20 09 2010

Introducing the next candidate to fill out SUGAR -N- THUNDER’s New World Order Employment Application: SEAN COLÓN!

Sean is a straight-up, kicka$$ media maker. He’s an avid adventurer in the storied realms of photo and video with a penchant for horror and a serious knack for special effects. To put it simply, the man’s got an eye for all that is awesome. From capturing historic Green-Wood Cemetery in haunting tones, to faux-wounding his subjects with striking realism, to churning out energy-filled snaps from the front row of rock shows, Sean is definitely a visual artist to know and watch. As he adds to his tattoo collection, expands his portfolio, and experiments with new techniques, Sean’s diving headfirst down the rabbit hole and there’s no telling what he’ll find…

Who I am & what I do:

I am Sean Colón and I do Photo/Video/Special FX.

Projects you should know about:

Sean Colón Photography: collection of Sean’s photos on Flickr

Bad Wolf: blog about tattoos and the stories behind them (in progress!)

Here’s some samples of his work [click to enlarge]:

The Survey:

1. What defines awesomeness to you? Being yourself and doing what you love most no matter what everybody else’s opinion is about it. Being a part of The Mike and Eric Show recently has really helped me to see that as well as inspire me. Not only have I been doing more photo and video but I’ve also laughed a lot more than I probably have my entire life.

2. Have you ever had a near-death experience? If by NDE you mean having my life flash before my eyes then no, but according to my parents I have come close to death. When I was little I had a bad kidney infection that if we had gone a little longer without having gone to the doctor I wouldn’t be here now answering these questions. Unless you’ve figured out how to channel my ghost through a computer =P

3. If you could be absolute ruler of the world for a day, what’s the first thing you’d do? I would buy the rights to Power Rangers and start doing the show the right way again, nothing like what Disney’s done to it. My version would definitely not be TV14.

4. What’s your guilty pleasure? It would probably be getting tattooed. I always think, “Ok this might be my last” but it never is. I already have 10 and I know that that number is going to continue to go up. They all say a little about me though. I try not to just get something because it looks nice.

5. What do you know now that you wish you knew as a teen/kid? I wish I would’ve known how fragile the mind and our memories are as well as my love for photography. My grandma has Alzheimer’s and I wish that I would’ve spent twice as much time with her and taken a lot more pictures than what I did. She always encouraged me and is a major reason I am who I am today. It would’ve been nice to have been able to invite her to a gallery opening or at least be able to tell her about it.

tales from the internet: hyperbole and a half

18 09 2010

just in case you didn’t know… things that don’t make sense are AWESOME. case in point: the total hilarity that is HYPERBOLE AND A HALF!

it always delights my strange little heart to stumble upon some kind of cartoon/flash animation/comic/etc that portrays life the way i see it - over-exaggerated, cartoony, and insane. pretty much. you know, all those weird sound effects that you make, the anime-like expressions you imagine yourself having, the outlandish circumstances you conjure up when you’re going along or talking to your friends.

hyperbole and a half is amazing because it’s about REALITY and how totally whacked off menial things can be. it’s the shiz you don’t even realize you’re doing or feeling until you see a cracked out looking cartoon staring back at you, making you laugh, and pointing to the fact that no matter how different we seem, we’re all going through the same annoying, confusing, torturous, weird crap.

this just makes it funny.

THE GIRAFFES: the show to end all shows

18 09 2010

so. THE MUTHAF&@*(!&#(*! GIRAFFES, rock/surf/metal straight out of BROOKLYN, NY. in short: ridiculously, insanely talented. ridiculously, insanely funny! awesome! raunchy! ingenious! one of the best bands EVER and a band that has been close to the cap & i’s loins hearts since we saw them way back in 2006.

they literally put on the show to end all shows every time they play (hence the title). these boys have been up to some hardcore awesomez since we last wrote, and – well… YOU! NEED! TO! KNOW!

1. THE GIRAFFES SHOW. FINALLY the divine madness of a LIVE giraffes show is officially caught on DVD – and CD! the giraffes show (available for purchase online!) was filmed at union pool in BK last summer and you KNOW we had to be there. so we were! we also got interviewed for the special features, AHEM. watch the trailer!

2. ROCK BAND. FINALLY, mainstream video games have caught the f@#& up: ‘DONE,’ a sick track from the giraffes’ last full-length, prime motivator, can now be purchased for rock band. grab that shiz HERE and check out a preview below.

3. NEW JAMZ A-COMIN’. or so we are told on the book of the face, and a HELL of a back-catalog you should check out NOW. their last (unofficial) release was the very aptly titled the giraffes ruled EP, which is just insane. 2 tracks that immediately come to mind: ‘the border’ rips your face off, and ‘the city’ is just a total nasty/gorgeous mini-epic. unfortunately it doesn’t seem like you can snag it online but only at shows. orrrr if you wire the cap & i some $$z (see also: gifts &/or hallucinogens) WE can snag it for you. if you know what i’m sayin’.

4. you know what else you should check out? SNT ALL UP IN THE ACTION.

here’s my super-juicy review of the giraffes for QRO Mag, and the grand finale, mr. whiptastic’s video of ‘the border’ and ‘done’ from the same show. DOUBLE YR PLEAZURE.

the giraffes RULE! yes, in present tense, because they continue to do so.

The Golden Dogs Will F-You Up … With Awesomeness

14 09 2010

On July 27, 2010 Canada dropped a bomb … on Canada… and the United States … and THE REST OF THE ENTIRE WORLD!

After an excruciatingly long wait, Toronto’s very own Golden Dogs released their follow up to 2006′s Big Eye Little Eye titled Coat of Arms (I hear they had a little label drama.. whateves).

Now here in the land of Sugar and also Thunder, we love this band. Proof right here. This new album is no exception. I’d like to give fancy song descriptions and of course nothing but awesome accolades but why do that when you can watch their Home Movies? That’s right, to couple up with the new album they released a live version of each song and are continuing to release parts on YouTube. But with all the editing done and filming in front of a green screen, IT’S LIKE THERE’S A MUSIC VIDEO FOR EVERY SONG!!!

So start here with part one:

and go from there.. you’ll thank me … or I’ll hurt you ;)

New World Order Employment Apps #001: LORRIE DORIZA

9 09 2010

Presenting the first to file SUGAR -N- THUNDER’S New World Order Employment Application (a.k.a. a random survey to introduce you to an awesome person we think you should know): LORRIE DORIZA!

We here at SNT have dug the shiz outta Miss Doriza since we first saw her at Miz Metro’s multimedia Trashion event last Fall (check her sick vocal loops in the Cap’s video!). The girl has skillz, ladies & gents, mean skillz. It seems like she’s constantly diving headfirst into brave new musical adventures, and churning it all out with quirky style, wit, and refreshing innovation. Oh, and did I mention: she’s got a kicka$$ voice and killer musical chops?!

CHECK HER OUT!

Who I am & what I do:

I’m a singer/songwriter in the unconventional sense. I also play the piano, ukulele and looping station. I’m a Taurus and a crazy cat lady.

Projects you should know about:

Lorrie Doriza – solo work on MySpace or Facebook.

Vespertina – I’ve finished an electronic/alternative pop album with the producer of Jedi Mind Tricks, Stoupe, to be released January 2011. It’s going to eat you up and spit you out! More on MySpace and Facebook.

The Survey:

1. What defines awesomeness to you? Like awesomeness in general? Or like, awesomeness of an individual? Place? Food? I dunno, I say awesome entirely too much so maybe it doesn’t even have that much meaning anymore. I don’t know why I’m philosophizing, but AWESOME means AWESOME.

2. Have you ever had a near-death experience? I’ve almost drowned a bunch of times. AWESOME!

3. If you could be absolute ruler of the world for a day, what’s the first thing you’d do? Give everyone a day off. Not really practical, I know, but it seems like that’s what everyone really needs right now.

4. What’s your guilty pleasure? Watching True Blood… and the Jersey Shore

5. What do you know now that you wish you knew as a teen/kid? That I should’ve taken some business classes. Bahahaha…
