Saladus

29 03 2008

I realize that there is this creepy genre unnamed so far.. and so it shall be called Saladus! I’ve come across a couple of unrelated videos that fuck with my mind in such a similar way i feel it is up to me connect them…. and I’m sure these videos will fuck with you too.

Requirements: Creepy, Usually Green, Mostly with a severe lack of logic.

I find it appropriate to name Saladus based on Salad Fingers (with a Latin twist) being my first experience of this madness.

Here’s what I have so far:

We already know Salad fingers… created by David Firth…. whose imagination is just beyond any moral or logical limits. Go to David Firth’s site here to look deeper into his dark mind… i hope for his own sake he doesn’t get this shit from his dreams.

Next i found Coffee Break, a video that … well … fuck it i’ll put it right here … watch

[edit: i guess nothing toxic doesn't like me stealing their video, so... go here]

sick, just sick

Here we have Old Greg which is just too damn weird, but it does make me want to go out and get some Baileys. I would never want to meet Old Greg, I think I would rather kill myself than marry him. Oh here’s an awesome side note.. he is in Electric Six’s Pulling the Plug on the Party for about a third of a second at the 19 second mark…gettin it on with Abe Lincoln… (that’s one huge WTF!) and there’s a Delorean!!! I love Deloreans!

The last I have to present to you Soper Aeternus…. I’m not going to say anything mean…..other than this is Salad Fingers in real life…. the music is surprisingly good, but way too depressing, I wish this shit would pick up with the Emos, that way they would still be depressed, but won’t have to listen to such shitty music all the time.

So there you go your brand spanking new Saladus fix.

egoraptor, sugar n thunder salutes you. thank you for being insane and having an overactive imagination and translating it into flash animations about video games.

back in the saddle: golden dogs, disturbed, lola staar

28 03 2008

okay so now it’s time for A BARRAGE OF RANDOM UPDATES!!!!!!!!!!

the golden dogs kicked ass at piano’s (158 ludlow at stanton) on the 20th! piano’s made for a nice little venue, decorated with long mirrors and HUGE pictures of tropical scenery. the bar in the front was packed to the HILT but through a glass door in the back is the stage area. there was a good turnout, which i was definitely happy to see, and the cap and i arrived to catch the middle/end of NYC band heavy rescue - the lead singer made me smile because you could tell that he loved being up there – he was belting out the lyrics off the mic even when it was the piano player’s turn to sing the vocals. they seemed proud of what they were doing, and it was cool.

the golden dogs took the stage as a four piece – dave azzolini on vocals and guitar, jessica grassia on keys and vocals, taylor knox on drums and stew keyduk on bass. neil quin, who we had met at the golden dogs’ electric six gigs last year, is no longer in the band (neil you rocked! take care, man!). i don’t know when the dogs will be back, but they rocked the shit out of NYC while they had the chance.

as we said to dave after the show, “you just spilled your guts all over the stage!” and they really did. the nervous energy is just radiating out of them, perhaps best exemplified in jessica’s bouncy piano playing! their set included ”birdsong,” “construction worker,” and “runouttaluck,” as well as a song the two of us hadn’t heard before called “painting ape,” the captain’s favorite, “dynamo,” and my favorite, “saints at the gates,” which got a particularly great crowd response. they of course took the opportunity to blow everyone away with their rendition of “nineteen hundred and eighty five,” which the captain later told me he never wants to end! the song is great on CD but when you hear it live and watch them drain that song for all it’s worth – classic concert moments, people.

the crowd shouted for an encore, but the dogs were beat – and i don’t blame them. the “golden dogs show is a bloodletting” comment certainly holds up. it was great to see them in NYC again, but even as they return to canada, keep an eye on these guys!

CoSM: Chapel of Sacred Mirrors

24 03 2008

After walking by it a good two or three times it’s hard to miss the flying banner of CoSM…Well let’s get to the basics…Which are far from basic.

For those who do not know CoSM = Chapel of Sacred Mirrors. Alex Grey’s “Sacred Mirrors” depict (what I think) the transformation of the body and mind. So after finding the building and walking up the four stories past all the Latin clubs that reside within the same structure. WE MADE IT!!! I finally entered and walked past the statue with eyed wings… Then brought far past the sober minded area that we follow everyday…and taken to the the first place of interest, the “Sacred Mirrors.” A mind bending area, controlled by your own preconceptions, perceptions and sight. The Mirrors show you the human. Existing from the elements that make us, through the stages of reincarnation and finally to higher states of mind. Transforming to pure enlightenment and beyond.

The whole series is as mystifying as it is psychedelic.

Online you can watch each mirror transform into the next … creating a hallucinatory vision.

Although it is called the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, it contains much more than “Sacred Mirrors,” including many other works from Alex Grey and his wife Allyson Grey.

More to come, more unnecessary profanity

canada’s the golden dogs return to NYC

17 03 2008

THE GOLDEN DOGS ARE IN NYC ON THURSDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

they opened for electric six at their williamsburg music hall and bowery ballroom shows last year, and, well, to put it simply: these canucks rocked us hard. we bought their album big eye little eye at the show, which contains the standout tracks “dynamo” and “saints at the gates,” as well as the awesome paul mccartney cover “nineteen hundred and eighty-five.”

in any case.. we’ll have more on them after the show, but seriously, catch ‘em while they’re here – they’re from CANADA!

check out the golden dogs at piano’s @ 11 pm on march 20th.

“wanna taste it on my tongue
breathe it right into my lungs
taste the blood and sweat like wine
bite the fruit right off the vine
stretch out like you’re crucified
on the altar of my eye
resurrect my beaten soul
turn my metal heart to gold..”

also, check this blurb from the yep roc records site.. “saints at the gates” is a personal favorite of mine, starting from the first time i ever heard it, but now with the mention of tom waits and the quote “a golden dogs show is a bloodletting” (!!!!!!!!!!!), i couldn’t help but post it:

on the lookout: goldfinger, pass kontrol

13 03 2008

SO! a couple things.

i almost forgot about this album (how could i?!??!).. GOLDFINGER! “hello destiny” is out april 22nd!!! they have a new song on their myspace and from what i can hear right now “one more time” isn’t bad at all.. but i wanna hear some bouncy ska! and horns! .. hahaha their second track on myspace came on (“answers”) and i literally just said “ohhh shit” out loud. there’s that driving ska geetar in the background and that slinky rhythm, oh yeah!!! gimme some of THAT! .. ahem. in any case, i CANNOT wait to see these guys in concert — i really hope they come to NYC!

aside from that – since i don’t have a lot of time at the moment – i just wanted to bring up three bands i’ve been looking into in my search for more fun local music. i’ve been looking into local venues (even in queens venues like LIC’s the creek and the cave or dominie’s hoek, since everyone always goes to manhattan and brooklyn..) and, well, out of the bands i was looking into yesterday, the majority (a.k.a. all but three) were REALLY soft and folky and sometimes just strange, with half spoken-word “vocals” and just overall this cracky MINIMALISM i really can’t get into.. so what to do?

the bands i end up digging are a rarity – they have to be UNIQUE, they have to stand out.. and, apparently, they seem to involve horns or saxophones, some unexpected kind of beats/influences or sound combinations, or just a general display of ENERGY (!!!!!!!!!!!) that is unfortunately seeming to be lacking from so many bands.. hey, i know, a lot of people can dig that sort of thing – that works, and whatever floats your boat is fine with me – but i think growing up with freddie mercury and the theatrics of queen and going to see ridiculously high energy live shows by the likes of the giraffes, electric six, night kills the day, etc. have spoiled me. or at least attuned me to what REALLY awesome music is REALLY like ;D

– audrey

edit/

so it does seem that the roller rink is a temporary installation for the spring and summer right now – taconic investment owns the childs building and plans to use it for a restaurant and entertainment hall. that doesn’t sound bad BUT, this is a roller rink, people! maybe if the rink drums up enough support it can stay? i can’t wait to see it. speaking of which, check out this awesome pic of the childs building actually open!
